Parents have now been thrust into the role of teacher because of the coronavirus, and this can be a scary time for many parents. Yes, I understand just like you do that parents are children’s first teachers, but in a more informal manner. Now, we are talking about teachers sending work home to parents and having them to do more of the formal homeschooling instruction. Fear not, help is here. While this and the next few blogs will not be an all-inclusive package for parents, the information I provide will at least help you to weather the storm.
Practical Ideas for right now
- Make the learning fun
- Get your kids up and moving around
- Add in as much sensory learning as you can even at the high school level
- Hold discussions or even fun debates
- Add in music or art to enhance the learning experience
- Quiet time where everyone can reflect, read, draw, write, or just sit and think.
- Try to steer them away from sleeping during this time
- Everyone finds a spot in the biggest room in the house and that is there spot for the next hour
- You lead by example
- This is also a good time for everyone to practice doing meditations. Suggestions on how to meditate.
- Create a schedule to follow
- The schedule doesn’t have to be jammed packed, but something so everyone knows expectations
- Post it in a common area
- Family togetherness time
- Sit down and be honest with one another
- Have those important conversations you have been avoiding
- Set ground rules for the discussion such as each person gets a certain number of minutes to speak before it goes to the next person
- Start and end with a moment of silence
- Play board games or online games
